The Future of Cryptography and Cybersecurity

What is cryptography? Why should it be important to you and why is cryptography and the cybersecurity industry growing by leaps and bounds?

Cryptography refers to the technique or practice of securing data and communications. There probably isn’t a day that goes by that you aren’t impacted by the integration and use of cryptography. Every time you launch your web browser, you probably see the letters “https”. “Https” is short for  hypertext transfer protocol secure. It’s a sophisticated technology, which encrypts your personal data. This is especially critical on e commerce websites designed to ask for sensitive financial information (i.e. when you use your credit card to make a purchase.) Cryptography is also used to protect you from being hacked when you use:

  • an ATM to withdraw or deposit money
  • pay/streaming television
  • your email address
  • personal health information at the doctor, clinic or hospital, etc.

While today it’s used almost exclusively in a technological context, the practice of cryptography dates back well before the digital age. The Navajo developed a code to send secret messages during World War II. The Navajos serving in the U.S. Marines were able to create a cryptographic technique that involved encrypting messages by basically speaking their native language. The Navajo are responsible for launching what is now a $114 billion dollar worldwide cybersecurity industry.

Today, cybersecurity experts use cryptography to design algorithms, ciphers, and other security measures that protect company and customer data. Designed to do more than protect your personal financial information, cryptography is used to protect our nation from enemies; foreign and domestic.

As more and more of our data goes up for sale, and there are more and more hackers trying to access that data – the need for cryptography and encryption professionals is paramount. Companies of every size, need experts who understand how to design, decipher, and safeguard cybersecurity systems.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that jobs in cybersecurity will grow by 32% between 2018 and 2028, much faster than the anticipated national average rate. Not only will there be plenty of jobs in cybersecurity, but they’ll pay well too.  According to the BLS, cyber security analysts earned a median annual salary of $98,350 in 2018.

As the field of cybersecurity continues to advance, the CPI team has been evolving with it. Representing some of the most technologically sophisticated companies in the world, CPI has built an IT recruitment team, whose sole focus is on providing their clients with best-in-class cybersecurity talent.

Although this specialized recruitment team understands that there is a talent shortage; their job is to locate and recruit. No excuses.
